When you are a breeder you sometimes run into people who you feel would be wonderful for one of your pups but who very quickly turn around and prove themselves to be the exact opposite. Unfortunately, we had that happen with one of our puppy buyers. The first time this young lady contacted me was right after we bred Mini. The very first day of talking, she made me numerous deals. This rubbed me the wrong way, but I figured she just wanted to see if I was up for bargaining. I could tell that she really wanted a puppy, so I called Jennifer and we both agreed to work with this young lady. Normally we wouldn’t deal with situations like that, as both Jennifer and I like to keep things uncomplicated, but we choose to make an exception. After a month of talking the puppies were finally here and she picked her baby out that week. We finally had everything worked out, so I thought.
A few weeks later we started the process of switching the puppies from milk to mash. Everything thing went well until later when Luke aspirated and we rushed him to the closest vet immediately. Aspiration is normal in puppies and at that time our only concern was him possibly getting aspiration pneumonia. The vet said he would be coughing for a while but he would be fine. So we started him on antibiotics to prevent the pneumonia. Once his meds were over I noticed he was still having problems with his throat so I took him to my vet for a recheck. While there I began asking her if there could be damage to his throat. My vet informed me that a lot of time when a puppy aspirates their throat muscles stretch out and they get small little cut in the esophagus, after hearing that I asked for x- rays. His esophagus was enlarged, at this point it could be one of two things, It could be that he simply injured his muscles when aspirating on the milk or worst case he has mega esophagus and will be a special needs puppy. Now worried about my other puppies I run home to get them for x-rays. The others were fine.
Three weeks later everything was going great. Luke was doing well even he had home. In fact, all but one puppy had loving homes. Everyone who was involved with the puppies was informed that Luke had something wrong with him. I talked about him at every bonding day. The young lady bought a second puppy from another breeder, but she was still planning on getting the one from us as well.
One week before the babies are ready to go home, I get a message from her asking me to call her. I thought something was wrong with that as she never asked me to just call her. So I called her and it was another bargain. At this point she had paid in full for her puppy. But she wanted to know if she could have Luke, she had talked about switching puppies a few times but I didn’t know she was serious. She gave me this very long sob story of how "he tugged on her heart stings" and told me how she really wanted him and how she fell in love with him. She went on to ask me to try to sell the puppy she had already picked out and paid for. She reassured me that she would take her original puppy if I couldn’t find him a home, but she wanted me to try.
So I called my friend who had been preparing to take Luke to see if she agreed to sending Luke with the young lady. We both agreed that she would have a little more time for him, so I told this young lady she could have him at no cost. That same night my friend calls me to inform me that this young lady was saying thing online I might want to look at. What I found floored me! This young lady was online asking for money and free stuff for Luke. Saying that he definitely has mega esophagus and needs donations for his care and vet bills! I asked her to remove her post since she was putting information out there that we were not sure was completely true. She revised the post and all was well.
Later that same night when my friend informed me again that this young lady is now saying she is not ready for the commitment that comes along with this puppy. At this point my friend and I were terrified, had we made a horrible choice? After a very long discussion we came to the conclusion that if she has to rely on strangers to pay for Luke’s vet bills and she was unsure about taking him she should not get him. We would be putting his life in danger. So I very apologetically and carefully told her she could not get Luke, as I was trying to not hurt her feelings. That did not go well. She became pretty upset that I went back on my word. I couldn’t believe it. Not only did she change her mind on what pup she wanted but she was saying she was having second thoughts. She wasn’t thinking about what was best for the puppy she was only thinking about her wants.
I wake up the next morning to condolence emails and a separate email from her. She told everyone Luke had died! I reassured everyone that he was alive and all of a sudden her post was gone. Then I read her email where she was asking for her money back on the puppy she had already purchased. Saying she was to upset to get any from me. Right after I finished arranging for her to come get her money I find out she’s telling other puppy buyers and people that she is not getting one at all and that they need to beware.
Since then I’ve found that she doing this to others. I've also been informed she is telling people that I do not train my pups, I do not send my pups home with any kind of packet, I do not register my pups, that my house is too chaotic, and that I am a bad breeder. I have plenty of people who will tell you that is all VERY untrue. My puppies go home with toys, food, treats, leash, collar, moms smell on everything have started basic puppy training (half the puppy owners called me and said their pup would sit by the back door to go potty and have had very few accidents...HMMM) and a packet of all their info, health cert, breed info packet, and paperwork. We send out our puppies papers once proof of spay/neutering is provided. She only came to my house a few times. Mainly when I had all the other families over, imagine 10 puppies and their owners in one home, of course it will be chaotic. And the only other day was valentines day. Which I spent the whole day helping my Grandmother and my best friends, meanwhile trying to get everything for my own Valentines day. I will say the only good thing that come of it was she loves to coupon and she picked me up a BUNCH of cat food. I paid her for it, but it was very nice of her to do that....
OH ALSO LUKE IS ALIVE NOW NAMED CHOMPER AND HAS BEEN X-RAYED AND IS CLEARED DOING JUST FINE!!!!!!! WE HAVE THE XRAYS TO PROVE IT.
I will end this in saying that Jennifer, Thomas(Gator Danes), Casey, and I, have nothing to hide. We are honest and up front with everyone. I have the x-rays records from the vet, emails from her in-law, and the 1100+ emails and text between her and I to back everything that we have said up. Please if anyone has any questions or concerns please fell free to ask us, we will gladly answer!
